The Student Services Team at a Community College was at a major pivot point after receiving a significant Title 1 grant to support low-income students. Leadership recognized that current outreach, enrollment and student support was geared toward mainstream middle-class students who spoke English as a first language. The team wanted to revamp systems and team values and practices to be more culturally competent, inclusive and supportive of equity goals.
What I/we did: Introduced the Intercultural Development Inventory to the team, had each team member take the Assessment and debriefed results one-on-one and as a team in a retreat setting. I then helped the team match their new-found understanding of equity and cultural competence principles to their Title 1 commitments and workplan.
Results:
- Student Services Team now designing and implementing outreach, enrollment and support geared toward a much more culturally and economically diverse student body.
- Team members regularly developing their cultural competence individually and as a team through study, discussion and program evaluation.
- Equity values and goals always on the agenda at team meetings and planning sessions.
