The Regional Board of a national nonprofit health organization needed to make a tough decision about whether to merge chapters or separate. This was a high-stakes pivot point for the well-respected organization and the many vulnerable clients that relied on their services.
I designed a process to ensure all voices – staff, volunteers, board members and clients – were heard and considered by the Regional Board. I facilitated a retreat in which board members and key leadership at each chapter digested all feedback and considered two strategies for moving forward. I helped the Board have tough conversations to make this difficult choice. After the decision had been made, I helped leadership create a plan to maintain crucial relationships and partnerships during the transition.
Results:
- Increased autonomy and responsibility for each state chapter of the National organization.
- Much-needed clarity about the role of the Region’s largest chapter and it’s willingness to carry the fundraising load for smaller chapters.
- Smaller more nimble board of directors with more sense of accountability for the financial health of the organization.
- A plan to “mend fences” between State Chapters and between the Regional Board and National Board.
